Kyle Henderson: My Journey in Agriculture

Hello everyone, my name is Kyle Henderson. I’m currently a fourth year student at the University of Guelph taking a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture with a Major in Crop Science. I’ve grown up in the agriculture industry, with my grandparents operating an auction house in Midwestern Ontario. I’ve always enjoyed the outdoors and tinkering on various antique tractors, which I have a collection of. After University I plan to continue my education pursuing a Master’s Degree under Doctor Kimberly Schneider at the University of Guelph. My project would entail grazing beef cattle and sheep on cover crops and the effect on subsequent corn yields. After all that is complete I strive to be a local independent agronomist, serving Huron, Grey, Bruce counties and beyond.

I’ve helped out at my grandparents auction since I’ve been able to walk, and have worked various agricultural summer jobs. Alongside my grandfather I help manage a small cash crop farm in Wingham, Ontario. We currently have a corn-soybean-winter wheat crop rotation, transforming the field from pasture after purchasing the farm. Alongside the farm work I’ve been a Crop Scout at the Midwest Co-op in Belgrave, Ontario for the past two summers. I did everything from mixing fertilizer, to scouting fields, to setting up and monitoring Western Bean Cutworm traps, and everything in-between. My current role is an Agronomic Technical Consultant (Agent) for Timac Agro Canada. There I have had many conversations with growers about their operations and how Timac Agro products can help them, although I would never let a company I’m working with cloud my recommendations. Morally I don’t want to recommend something that isn’t right for the farmer, agriculture is built on trust, not “seedy” salesman (no pun intended).

On the side I have a soft spot for old iron, I love buying, selling, and collecting just about anything old, especially tractors. I have vintage tractors, snowmobiles, mopeds, an airport tug, a race truck, you name it I may have it (and it may be for sale!). My favourite tractor is the one on my business card, my great grandfather’s Oliver Standard 77 that he bought new way back in the day. I’ve also had my hands in many small scale agricultural adventures including market gardening and some backyard chickens, both of which were enjoyable and taught me some interesting lessons.

Overall, farming is a learning process, and I’m still learning something new every day. This site is to put those lessons into words and hopefully help you learn something along the way too!
